What Is a Rotating Proxy?

A rotating proxy is a service that automatically changes your exit IP address with each request (or at a configurable interval). Instead of one static IP, you access a pool of thousands or millions of IPs through a single gateway endpoint.

When you connect to a rotating proxy, the gateway server selects an available IP from the pool, uses it to forward your request, then returns the response. The next request uses a different IP, and so on.

How Rotation Prevents IP Bans

Websites enforce rate limits and bans at the IP address level. If IP 1.2.3.4 makes 100 requests to Amazon in 5 minutes, Amazon bans 1.2.3.4.

With a rotating proxy pool of 1 million IPs:

Request 1 → IP 1.2.3.4

Request 2 → IP 5.6.7.8

Request 3 → IP 9.10.11.12

Each IP makes only 1 request. Amazon can't ban any single IP because each one looks like a different home user browsing normally.

Sticky Sessions vs Pure Rotation

Pure rotation (per-request): New IP on every request. Best for stateless scraping where each request is independent.

Sticky sessions: Maintain the same IP for a defined time window (1–30 minutes) or until explicitly released. Essential for:

Multi-step login flows (login → browse → checkout)

Form submissions requiring session state

Any workflow where IP changes mid-session trigger security alerts

Configure sticky sessions through session ID parameters in the proxy authentication string. Example: user:pass-session-12345@proxy.host:port maintains a session labeled '12345'.

How to Configure Rotating Proxies

Most rotating proxies use a backconnect gateway format:

host: gate.provider.comport: 7777username: your-usernamepassword: your-password

For country targeting: ``` username: your-username-country-US ```

For sticky sessions: ``` username: your-username-session-mysession1 ```

For both: ``` username: your-username-country-US-session-mysession1 ```

Check your provider's specific authentication string format.

Pool Size: How Much Does It Matter?

Pool size matters, but pool quality matters more.

A provider claiming '200M IPs' with many inactive, flagged, or poor-quality IPs will perform worse than a provider with 5M clean, highly available IPs.

For practical use:

1M+ IPs: sufficient for most residential rotating needs

5M+ IPs: comfortable for aggressive scraping of single targets

10M+ IPs: needed for ultra-high-volume single-target scraping

For datacenter rotating pools, 10,000–100,000 diverse-subnet IPs is typically more than sufficient.
